The 2020 Recreation Manitoba Professional Development Day will be delivered as a series of 5 two-hour long events which explore a number of topics relevant to the recreation profession and career development. Topics covered include physical literacy, mental health in a workplace, navigating uncertainty, gender equity and inclusion in recreation.

Move and Play through Physical Literacy

Move and Play through Physical Literacy will introduce the concept of physical literacy and fundamental movement skills and explore why they are key to lifelong participation in physical activity. Participants will explore how building confidence, motivation and skill can attract and help retain participants in your programs and help them have more fun. The workshop will also look at available resources to support your work and help with building and modifying games and activities for your participants. (Children and Youth focused but applicable to all ages).

Lindsay Wright is the coordinator of the Edmonton Be Fit For Life Centre, housed at the Faculty of Kinesiology Sport and Recreation at the University of Alberta. Lindsay supports Albertans to be physically active by offering workshops and professional development for practitioners who deliver physical activity opportunities.

We are excited to welcome Paul back to Manitoba to provide some energy and insights as we kick off the new year. Paul has a background in psychology and higher education, is the author of two books, and his weekly RIPPLES emails are enjoyed by over 30,000 subscribers each Monday morning. Thousands more follow @RipplesGuy on social media, where Paul regularly posts upbeat content and practical ideas for helping people bring their best selves to work and life.

Early in 2020 when it was clear that Covid-19 was going to impact just about every aspect of life for quite some time, Paul identified four focus areas that he thought would be useful and important as we navigated unparalleled uncertainty: Curious minds, Open hearts, Calm spirits, Nurturing Health. Connecting these focus areas with three mindsets that are common in times of challenge and change reveals 12 actions that have helped thousands of people survive, revive and thrive the many unexpected twists and turns 2020 revealed. Paul will show us how to leverage these actions as we grapple with all kinds of difficulties and transitions that inevitably occur in work and life. Mental Health & Wellness in the Workplace

COVID-19 is having a negative impact on Canadians’ mental health, with many seeing their stress levels double since the onset of the pandemic. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, 50% of Canadians reported worsening mental health since the pandemic began. This fact is alarming since in any given year, 1 in 5 people in Canada will personally experience a mental health problem or illness. Do you find yourself stressed out? Unable to concentrate? Feeling like you just cannot do it anymore? Unable to concentrate? This session will use components from the SJA Mental Health & Wellness in the workplace course to give you an understanding of how the workforce is changing, how best to overcome stress at work, and how to support your staff and peers with mental health challenges. Leave with resources that will help you at work and in your personal life.

Creating an Inclusive Environment

This workshop will focus on how to create recreation and sport environments that are inclusive and safe for staff, coaches, volunteers and athletes/participants. Through the recreation lens, participants can expect an interactive workshop providing an opportunity to hear success stories and look critically at their own programming.

Gender Equity in Recreation

This workshop will provide participants with information and tools needed to work toward gender equity in their organizations and programming. After this interactive session, participants will leave with ideas on how to encourage and retain female participation in their recreation and sport programs.
