Lifesaving Society of Manitoba

Northern Water Smart® Instructor

As a Northern Water Smart® Instructor, you will deliver Water Smart® Public Education programs, Swim to Survive™ lessons, first aid, and boating safety courses in rural and remote communities across Manitoba. You will travel and experience Manitoba as few others have, and will work with various cultures and in unique conditions. The Society anticipates hiring up to ten (10) instructors for the 2021 season. All positions are subject to funding availability, and we will continue to accept applications until all positions are filled.

Time Commitment & Working Conditions

  • Regular travel to rural and remote communities will be required;
  • Most work occurs in a clean and comfortable environment, but there may be times where work will take place in locations that are more unstable and/or unpredictable;
  • Work may involve irregular hours, including weekends and holidays;
  • 12 to 18 week term between May 3 and September 3, 2021
    • Work from our Winnipeg office and participate in day trips in May and June;
    • Travel Monday to Friday during July and August to communities across Manitoba.

Key Responsibilities

  • Helping to organize and deliver many Water Smart® initiatives, including EAL safety presentations, Farm Safety Days, and other public education events;
  • Travelling to rural and remote locations in Manitoba, including many Indigenous communities, to teach Lifesaving Society programs, including Swim to Survive™, Boat Operator Accredited Training™, and First Aid & CPR;
  • Submitting weekly reports and administrative paperwork to the Water Smart® Coordinator.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Valid Class 5 (Full) Manitoba driver’s license (or equivalent);
  • Current National Lifeguard and Standard First Aid & CPR-C certifications;
  • Current Lifesaving Society – Swim for Life® Instructor and Lifesaving & First Aid Instructor certifications;
  • Previous experience as a swimming/lifesaving instructor;
  • Ability and willingness to work with various cultures;
  • Ability and willingness to travel to rural and remote locations by air, boat, bus, car, or rail;
  • Criminal Record and Child Abuse/Vulnerable Persons Registry checks.

Asset Qualifications & Skills

  • Lifesaving Society – National Lifeguard Instructor certification;
  • Lifesaving Society – Trainer appointment (any stream);
  • Previous experience travelling to rural or remote locations in Manitoba;
  • Previous experience working with diverse cultures and groups;
  • Fluency in a second language, especially a North American Indigenous language.

Training Provided

  • Earn your Pleasure Craft Operator Card & become a Lifesaving Society B.O.A.T. Instructor;
  • Recertify many of your certifications & learn about Lifesaving Society Water Smart® programming.

Wages & Benefits

  • Seasonal salary of between $9,000 and $14,000 and coverage of travel costs;
  • Amazing experience and accomplishment for future resumes or references.

No relocation package is available for this position.

Dakota Community Centre

Older Adult Program Coordinator

The Dakota Community Centre – Jonathan Toews Sportsplex, located in south St. Vital in Winnipeg, is looking for an enthusiastic coordinator who thrives on client-first service and working with people who are in the age demographic of 55+.  This multi-faceted role requires someone who understands the actions and tasks that are involved with managing a successful program, including promotion, client experience management, event management, budgeting and handling multiple priorities related to working with this age group.

About the Role

This diverse role requires a professional who is enthusiastic, motivated and excels in managing multiple tasks.  The Coordinator understands people they will be working with have a variety of abilities, needs and preferences but do not view themselves as a stereotype. You understand the different dynamics within this demographic group knowing that people may come to the program with a chronological age but be in different life stages and appreciates the sensitivity around this.      

As the Coordinator, you directly oversee all aspects of the older-adult program under the direction of the Director of Operations, including budget planning and control, program design, client communication and internal collaboration with internal team members who are integral to creating a successful program. The Coordinator also works with the volunteer coordinator to support DCC programs and services and acts as the Senior Resource Coordinator.


  • Post-secondary training or degree in recreational studies, social services, health or other relevant training to relate well with the older adult population.  A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Ability to lead programs is considered an asset.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and make decisions in accordance with applicable rules, regulations and policies set forth by DCC and /or The City of Winnipeg.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and AED certificate is desired or in progress.
  • Must be able to complete a successful Criminal Record Check or have successfully passed in the last 6 months.
  • Eligible to work in Canada.

Customer Service Representative

The Dakota CC is looking to hire part Customer Service Representatives who thrive on client-first service and working with people of all ages and abilities.

As a Customer Service Representative, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the main reception area for the Centre, located in the Dakota Fieldhouse. Duties include, but are not limited to, client interactions both in-person and by phone, sharing information on programs and services, processing program and membership registrations, financial transactions, and general cleaning and maintenance. The Customer Service Representative may also assist Facility staff for equipment set-ups and take-downs, as required, as well as assisting to ensure the Facility is neat, clean, and safe. Tasks may require some light lifting and physical work.

The successful candidate will be someone who is friendly, self-motivated, an exceptional team player, adaptable, reliable, and possesses strong customer service skills.

  • Operate the main reception desk for Dakota CC Fieldhouse.
  • General reception duties include: greeting visitors, answering the phone, and providing information/answering questions regarding DCC programs and services and/or appropriately redirecting inquiries
  • Monitor use of the facilities to ensure those present are registered to be in the building and following Dakota CC policies
  • Monitor the safety of all activities and programs and respond to any safety concerns
  • Lead facility tours to prospective clients
  • Process program registration and membership applications and collect various forms of payment
  • Register and issue access cards for track and weight room membership
  • Assist in collection of membership cards and distribution of access cards and wrist bands
  • Light cleaning duties and tidying throughout the facilities, as necessary
  • Assist with data entry
  • Assist with member retention strategies
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Strong website navigational skills and knowledge of www.dakotacc.com will be an asset.
  • Basic knowledge of administrative software such as Microsoft Suite/Office.
  • High level of public relations/customer service understanding for this role.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and make decisions in accordance with applicable rules, regulations and policies set forth by DCC.
  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be a good communicator, referring specific questions to the appropriate person and can handle public inquiries in a courteous manner.
  • Diplomacy and tact will be a key attribute you bring to this role as you are dealing with members of the public in a variety of ages i.e. young adults up to seniors.
  • Must have good record management and document handling skills
  • Flexibility will be considered an asset (i.e. available to work a variety of shifts, primarily weeknights and weekends).
  • Must be able to complete a successful Criminal Record Check and Child Abuse Registry or have successfully passed in the last 6 months.
  • A combination of relevant education and experience will be considered.
